As a child growing up in the mountains with only a fireplace for heat, I can remember wondering what fire actually was. Through years of chemistry and physics courses, I finally learned the answer with enough certainty that I no longer wonder while sitting around a campfire. Instead, my mind is free to wander to more philosophical thoughts, about how fire is a fundamentally different subject for photography because, instead of reflecting the light from the sun, it generates its own light.
